Casino house edge explained

Quick Summary

  • House edge is the share of each stake a game keeps on average over the long run.
  • It is the mirror image of RTP: edge plus return equals the whole stake.
  • Short sessions swing widely; long play drifts towards the edge.
  • Edge differs by game and bet type, so choices matter, but none removes it.

Every casino game is built so the operator comes out ahead on average. That built-in margin is the house edge. It is not a trick or a sign of cheating; it is the price of playing, and it is how the business pays for itself. Knowing how it works lets you pick bets with open eyes and ignore any pitch that claims to cancel it.

What the house edge is

The house edge is the average share of each stake that the game keeps over a very large number of rounds. If a game has an edge of a few per cent, then across a huge number of bets, players in total lose roughly that share of what they staked.

It says nothing about any single bet. You can win ten in a row or lose ten in a row. The edge only shows itself reliably over volume, which is why casinos are comfortable with winners: the average is on their side.

House edge versus RTP

Return to player, or RTP, is the same idea from the player's side. If RTP is 96 per cent, the edge is 4 per cent. Add them together and you get the whole stake. Slots usually show RTP in the game info screen; table games usually have an edge fixed by the rules.

For slots, always read the info screen rather than a forum post, as some games can run at different settings. Our page on high RTP slots explains where to look.

A worked example

Say a game has an edge of 5 per cent and you stake ৳100 on each of 200 rounds. Total staked is ৳20,000. On average, the game keeps about ৳1,000 of that. You might finish ahead, or behind by much more, because short runs are noisy. The ৳1,000 is the long-run average, not a prediction for your evening.

Now raise the number of rounds. The more you play, the more your result tends to move toward that average, which is why long grinding sessions on any game rarely end well.

How edge varies across games

Edge depends on the game and on your choices within it. Table games with simple rules often have a lower edge than novelty side bets, and some bets in the same game cost more than others. In baccarat, for example, the available bets are not priced equally, so check the rules and payout table for each.

Betting has an equivalent: the bookmaker's margin built into odds. See betting odds for how to spot it. For slots, edge sits alongside volatility; read slot volatility for the other half of the picture.

  • Check the rules and payouts before choosing a bet.
  • Prefer bets you understand over ones that look exciting.
  • Do not mistake a lucky run for a method.
  • Bonuses may change the effective cost, but turnover rules apply.

What the edge means for you

Treat play as paid entertainment. The expected cost is the edge times the amount you stake in total, and it grows with every spin, so fast games with high stakes cost more per hour. Budget accordingly, using the steps in bankroll management.

No betting system, signal or pattern changes the edge. If someone claims otherwise, they are selling something.

Three steps

Estimate what a session costs in 3 steps

  1. 1
    Find the edge or RTP

Read the game info screen or rules to see the return figure or bet pricing.

  2. 2
    Multiply by total staked

Estimate how much you will stake across the session and multiply by the edge to see the average cost.

  3. 3
    Compare with your budget

Decide whether that expected cost is acceptable entertainment spending, and adjust stake or length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the house edge the same as cheating?

No. It is a disclosed margin built into the rules and payouts. A game can be run exactly as designed and still have an edge in the operator's favour.

Can I reduce the house edge?

You can choose lower-edge bets within a game and avoid costly side bets, but you cannot remove it. No staking pattern changes it.

Why do some people win big then?

Short-term results are random and swing widely. Some players finish ahead, but across many players and many bets the average moves toward the edge.

Is RTP the same as the edge?

They are two views of one number. RTP is the average share returned; the edge is what remains. Together they add up to the full stake.

Does the edge apply to sports betting?

Yes, in the form of the bookmaker margin inside the odds. Our guide to odds shows how to see it.
